• ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

In addition to the University normal Entrance and Admission requirements, candidates seeking admission into the department of Health and Physical Education must possess the following:

  • For Four Year Degree Programme in Physical Education and Recreation:
  • Credit in Biology or Health Science or Physical Education in WASC, GCE, SSC or NECO
  • Pass in the departmental screening test on practical sports skills
  • For Three Year Degree Programme
  • Two or more advanced level papers in GCE or HSC of which one must be Biology or Zoology
  • Merit level in NCE Health & Physical Education
  • Merit level in National Institute for sports (NIS) certification or its equivalent
  • A pass in Two Year Diploma in Health and Physical Education of the University of Nigeria with Distinction/Credit/merit, plus credit level pass in 4 subjects in GCE, WASC or SSC obtained in not more than two sittings, which must include Biology or Health science or Physical Education.

      B.Sc in Health Education

(i)       For Four Year degree programme in Health Education

Credit in Biology or Health Science or Physical education in WASC, GCE, SSC or NECO

(ii)For Three Year Degree programme in Health Education

  • Two or more advanced level papers in GCE or HSC of which one must be Biology or Zoology;
  • Merit level in NCE Health and Physical Education
  • A Pass in Two year Diploma in health and physical Education of the University of Nigeria, with Distinction/Credit/Merit, plus credit level pass in 4 subjects in GCE, WASC, SSC or NECO obtained in not more than two sitting;
  • Technical Teacher Certificate in Health Education obtained from a recognized institution;
  • At least pass in 3-year health Education/health technology/Nursing/public health Nursing Diploma programme or an equivalent health programme in an recognized university or health institution in addition to minimum of 4 credits in SSC final examination WASC, NECO or GCE ordinary level.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

            The following categories of candidates may be considered eligible for admission into any of the Higher Degree programmes for the department;

 MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.ED. HEALTH EDUCATION)

  1. Holders of B. Sc. or B.A. or B.Ed. in Health and Physical Education or Health Education with at least Second Class Honours or its equivalent of the University of Nigeria or any other recognized University. Such a degree must be obtained in Faculty of Education of the University.
  2. Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above acceptable to the Senate of the University.

MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.ED. PHYSICAL EDUCATION/RECREATION)

  1. Holders of B.Sc. or B.A. or B. Md. in Health and Physical Education or Physical Education with at least Second class Honours or its equivalent of the University of Nigeria or any other recognized University. Such a degree must be obtained in the faculty of Education of the University.  
  2. Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above acceptable to the Senate of the University.
  • D. PROGRAMME (HEALTH EDUCATION)

Holder of M. A. or B.Sc. or M.Ed. in Health Education, M.Sc Nursing Science Education, M.Sc Community Health or Public Health Education, or M.PH or acceptable related subject with at least a Grade point Average (G.P.A.) of -3.50 or a 5 point scale or its equivalent from the University of Nigeria or any other recognized University.

  • D. PROGRAMME (PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION)

Holders of M.A. or M.Sc. or M.Ed. in Physical Education or Recreation or   acceptable related subject with at least a Grade point Average (G.P.A.) of 3.50 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent from the University of Nigeria or any other University recognized by Senate.

MODE OF STUDY FOR MASTER’S PROGRAMMES

           A study for the degree of Master may be prosecuted: by coursework to be examined in written papers together with research work to be presented in   a project report, where course work predominates over research and constitutes not less than two thirds of the total credit hours

MODE OF STUDY FOR PH.D. PROGRAMME:

            A Ph.D. candidate shall be required to submit a research work in form of a thesis for the award of the Ph.D. degree and in accordance with the requirements of the Faculty of Education and the Postgraduate Studies Regulations.

 DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME:

            The duration of the Postgraduate programme of the department is in keeping with the policy of the University which is as follows:

  • MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME (M.ED)

FULL TIME: A minimum of 12 Calendar months or a maximum of 3 Calendar years.

PART TIME: A minimum of 18 calendar months or a maximum of 5 calendar years

  • SANDWICH M.Ed. PROGRAMME:

A minimum of 3 long vacations and a maximum of 6 long vacations

DURATION OF MASTER’S /PH.D PROGRAMME

Full-time: 3 calendar years minimum 5 Calendar years maximum

Part-time: 4 Calendar years minimum 6 Calendar years maximum

     (C ) PH.D. PROGRAMME (AFTER MASTER’S DEGREE)

FULL TIME:  a minimum of 2 calendar years; or a maximum of 5 calendar years.

PART-TIME: a minimum of 3 calendar years; or a maximum of 6 calendar years.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Graduates of these degree programme may take up appointment as:

  • Teachers of Health Education/Health Science, and Physical Education in educational or health institutions:
  • Directors of sports or organizing secretaries in sports councils and other sports   agencies, sports psychologists as well as administration and   directors of health programme;
  • Recreation organizers in recreation centres;
  • Directors of tourist centres
  • Health counselors in educational and health institutions;
  • Environmental health officers; and

Physical and occupational therapists in rehabilitation centres and orthopaedic hospitals
